Staff Profile

Belén Seara is a management analyst for the Health and Policy Planning team. She brings 15 years of experience in operationalizing equity and health equity in action-oriented research, policy and program development, coalition and power building, and community organizing. She has a master’s in public administration with a focus on public policy from the University of Southern California. In her spare time, she enjoys taking her two energetic kids to Red Morton park.

We are almost two years into a pandemic that has made crystal clear that the living conditions of our residents impact their health outcomes. Poverty, type of employment and overcrowding are drivers of COVID-19 infections and hospitalization rates, with lower-income residents of color experiencing the highest social, health and economic burdens of this pandemic.

A Path to Resilient Homes

Greetings Get Healthy SMC Partners,

Last year, the Built Environment Committee (BEC) of BARHII, which is the Bay Area coalition of public health departments, has been exploring the intersection of habitability and community resiliency. Environmental factors such as extended heat waves and severe weather caused by climate change exposes those who reside in substandard households to higher health risks such as heat-related illnesses or death.

I’m excited to introduce myself and to have this venue to share my perspective on how health and economics overlap and what it takes to build a healthy economy in our county. I am the new Community Health Planner, and I am coordinating the Healthy Economy program. I look forward to working with all of you to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy that promotes the well-being of all San Mateo County residents and workers.
