The following were identified as top strategies for NFO/RWC:
The following were identified as the top needs in NFO/RWC:
- Housing costs, high cost of living, and lack of living wage job opportunities (and lack of opportunities to build needed skills/knowledge needed to get living wage jobs)
- Structural + institutional racism (especially related to educational and career opportunities and interactions with law enforcement)
- Lack of supportive adults (often because parents/caregivers are working multiple jobs and there are not enough opportunities for youth to connect with other supportive adults)
- Access to resources (especially related to mental health and substance use, affordable childcare and preschool, and legal information and services)
- Safety (gangs, domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, police harassment, and bullying)
What We Learned in NFO/RWC
We learned that parents/caregivers who took the survey in English were nearly 4 times as likely (63%) than those who took the survey in Spanish (16%) to identify at least 2 people who help them care for their children.
Both youth and caregivers reported being most likely to go to friends for help, with family members and teachers also ranked high.
