Walk Audit in South San Francisco
San Mateo County Office of Education hosted a walk audit at Martin Elementary in South San Francisco. The fifth graders from this school were instrumental in making November 14 Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. The walk audit was facilitated by national transportation and public health consultant, Mark Fenton and included about 1.5 miles of easy-paced walking on streets connecting the school and community. The walk audit team did extensive outreach to bring together school personnel, county and city staff, community members, and other stakeholders to assess walkability, pedestrian safety, bikeability, and any barriers that exist around the school. This was followed by a discussion on challenges and potential solutions and road safety improvements, that will lead to programs, projects and/or institutional policy changes based on community feedback.
