Second Units Are Now Easier to Build and Bring Up to Code
San Mateo County is promoting second units, more popularly known as granny units, as a way to support density in suburban neighborhoods. The latest step taken in this direction was the recently adopted Second Unit Amnesty & Loan Program to help homeowners in unincorporated areas of the county avoid red tagging of unpermitted second units by making certain health and safety upgrades. The program will launch later this year to help homeowners to navigate the process. This program advances a healthy housing agenda that balances the need to provide affordable housing while mitigating potential displacement and homelessness. This year Get Healthy SMC is funding Rebuilding Together Peninsula to focus on advancing garage conversions in East Palo Alto to provide affordable housing to low-income residents.
