San Mateo-Foster City School District Chooses to Invest in School-Based Behavioral Programs
San Mateo-Foster City School District School Board voted to terminate their contract with the San Mateo Police Department to provide School Resource Officers (SRO) on their middle school campuses. Citing a lack of data on program metrics and a need to invest in programs focused on supporting young people, the School Board members did not see the value of continuing to fund the SRO program. Instead, they are looking to invest in school-based staff including social workers, psychologists, etc, and strategies such as Restorative Justice Practices which supports a positive school climate and takes a non-punitive approach to school discipline, as well as other training and support for staff. In addition, District next steps include deep listening sessions with staff and community members to identify and prioritize needs in support of students and school safety.
