Rising Wages, Lowering Childcare Options
The latest statewide minimum wage hike gave over a million Californians a raise, but priced some out of childcare subsidies. A recent nationwide survey shows a third of parents have difficulty finding childcare, with many living in “childcare deserts.” In San Mateo County, we have a shortage of childcare facilities with 32% unmet demand. To help the situation in San Mateo County, the new Early Care and Education Facilities Task Force is looking into how to better identify potential locations for child care providers.
