New Data on Housing Instability and Health Impacts on Kids
The high cost of living in the Bay Area continues to take a toll on residents. Stable, affordable housing is vital to a healthy, vibrant community, and is linked to positive health outcomes for children. New data from Kidsdata.org shows that 39% of children in San Mateo County are living in households with a high rent burden. 63% of Latino and 56% of Black residents experience the housing burden in our county compared to 45% of White residents experiencing housing burden. Unstable housing can have harmful health impacts on children and their families. Affordable housing supports the health and well-being of children and allows them to focus on their education. Policies that support stable housing help ensure communities of color are able to remain in their home and maintain healthy habits.
