In San Mateo County, retail rents have been steadily increasing in San Mateo County between 2014 and 2016, putting significant cost pressures on small neighborhood businesses. The US Census’ 2012 Survey of Business Owners found that San Mateo County businesses owned by white entrepreneurs have significantly more revenue on average than businesses owned by entrepreneurs of color.  In an effort to help stabilize vulnerable small businesses, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the Bay Area is piloting the Legal Services for Entrepreneurs San Mateo Healthy Business project to provide free education and legal assistance to low-income entrepreneurs and small business owners of color in North Fair Oaks.
