Proposition 21 was defeated with 59.9% voting no on the measure. This State initiative would have enabled housing rent control at the local level. The rent control would have only applied to housing built at least 15 years ago and exempted landlords with two homes or fewer. Since the proposition failed, the current State law will remain that prohibits rent control on housing built after February 1995, as well as single-family homes.
