Close to 73% Voter Turnout in San Mateo County So Far!

Post

This turnout is historic for a mid-term election and San Mateo County’s Election Office is still counting votes so this rate may go up. The high voter turnout is in part attributed to the new election system—the Voter’s Choice Act—that our County is piloting. This system aims to make voting easier with more days and more ways to vote. Because voting influences decisions that directly impact our communities and in turn influence community health outcomes, Health Policy and Planning (HPP) partnered with the San Mateo County Elections Office to reach out to SMC Health partners and clients to maximize voter participation. Overall, we hosted thirteen presentations at meetings throughout the county, from Daly City to Redwood City to the coast. We were able to reach over 180 health partners who could help inform their clients of the new ways to vote in San Mateo County. Although the election is over, the work around increasing civic engagement participation is not done! As civic engagement is correlated with health outcomes, HPP will continue this work in the future.
