In response to recently heightened deportations and detentions, San Mateo County increased funding for immigration legal services as well as a rapid response network organized by Get Healthy SMC partner Faith In Action. Another Get Healthy SMC partner, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, created a guide to help immigrant small business owners protect their assets in the event of detention or deportation. Onerous legal costs, community wealth-stripping, and exclusion from banks are just a few ways federal immigration policies have been harming the economic well-being of immigrant communities and jeopardizing resident health by undermining financial security, which is an important health factor.
