Healthy Neighborhoods Sucesses
Healthy Neighborhoods Stories
More and more communities and organizations across San Mateo County are considering how they can shape their downtowns, provide housing for the people who work locally, and build neighborhoods that make it easier to be healthy.
Health and wellness integrated into North Fair Community Plan
The North Fair Oaks Community Plan is the first land use plan in San Mateo County that fully integrates health and wellness! It includes our County’s first Health and Wellness Chapter in a land use plan. Adopted by the San Mateo County Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors, the plan seeks to make streets easier and safer for walking and bicycling, calls for healthy neighborhood retail stores, more parks, and fewer fast food restaurants.
Removing Barriers to Fresh Food
The NEAT project worked with older adults in East Palo Alto to assess how their sidewalks and streets helped or hindered being able to walk to different places. Residents then took their findings to the City Planning Department to work together on improvements. The project also built a community garden.
Teens Making A Change Walkability Audit
Teens Making a Change (TMAC) youth assessed safety concerns that limit walkabilty in their neighborhood. They utilized their research findings to create recommendations and an ordinance for the city of Pacifica to improve the street crossing.
