- July 30, 3 - 5 p.m. - "What’s on Your Plate?" screening at Redwood City's Fair Oaks Library, located at 2600 Middlefield Road. What can we do as a community to stop epidemics like obesity and diabetes? This film is a documentary covering two eleven-year-old kids as they explore their place in the food chain.
- August 4, 6:30 p.m. - "Nourish: Food + Community" screening at Redwood City's Downtown Library, located at 1044 Middlefield Rd. Nourish opens a broad conversation about our food system and encourages citizen engagement, particularly among young people and families. With a distinctly positive vision, Nourish offers specific action steps viewers can take to help create a sustainable food future. The screening will be held in the community room. Sponsored by Friends of the Library.
- August 12, 1-7 p.m., Benefit flower and garden show for the UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners program of San Mateo and San Francisco counties. This will be held at the home of Burlingame resident John Ward, 792 Willborough Rd. Open garden with self-guided tours all afternoon; instructional tours at 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30. - Aug. 1- Sept. 30 - The Great Race for Clean Air, sponsored by Commute.org, is a friendly competition between employers to encourage employees to use commute alternatives to solo driving such as ridesharing, carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking or riding transit. These commute alternatives provide significant CO2 greenhouse gas emissions savings over solo driving. All employees who log their commute online are entered into weekly random drawings. At the end of the Great Race, employers with the highest CO2 savings (that is, the average CO2 saved per employee in your organization) and employers with the highest employee participation are the winners. Winners will be declared in each county and Bay Area-wide. Register here.
- Sept. 21 – The Art and Science of Evaluation: Sound Methods for Assessing Policy and Environmental Change webinar. How do we know if our change strategies are working? Evaluation is a critical component of any effort that seeks long-term sustainable change. In this webinar, panelists will discuss key questions for measuring success in community environments.
- Oct. 1 - Children First: Promoting Ecological Health for the Whole Child, a one-day symposium at UCSF. Pediatric Integrative Medicine embraces a holistic, whole-child approach, specifically examining the context – the ecology – in which optimal health and wellness is promoted. This groundbreaking one-day symposium will highlight a range of interacting factors that influence child health and development, including nutrition, education, socio-economic status, exposures to toxic chemicals, and access to preventive health care.
- October 12 Save the date for the second Active Public Spaces Convening, hosted by San Mateo County Supervisor Carole Groom. Last year's convening brought together health officials, city staff and elected officials, school leadership and community-based organizations to learn innovative ways of increasing the use of public spaces for social connection and physical activity and to hear about local work in this area. This year's keynote speaker will be Dan Burden. Burden has more than 38 years of experience in developing, promoting, and evaluating active transportation, addressing mobility and access issues, providing the best in traffic calming practices, and leading sustainable community design efforts.
